ABS | Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene
ABS is a plastic that is balanced in both hardness and toughness. Important features which include good impact resistance, resistant to friction, can be mixed with colour pigments for beauty. Some grades can also be electrically impregnated to give a metal-like glow. Can also choose to use the molding process so that the workpiece has a glossy or matte surface finish. Therefore, it is used to make interior parts such as instrument panels, dashboard components, pillar trim and is also used as aesthetic parts for motorcycle.
But the disadvantage of ABS is its low resistance to weathering, and is less resistant to sunlight, i.e. tend to turn a darker shade of yellow when used continuously in sunny conditions. Therefore a new type of plastic was developed to improve the limitation, the plastic called ASA.
ASA has better properties than ABS, being more resistant to bending forces, weathering, sunlight, color fading, not cracking and resistant to corrosion. But with a higher price.
ASA is therefore widely used in outdoor applications. Used to make covers for agricultural machinery, Outdoor furniture, Traffic light equipment, car electrical systems. ASA is also used to replace the ABS in automotive parts such as console, side mirror, radiator grille etc.
